Holiday Party 2008

The Holiday Party will be on Sunday, December 21 so mark your calendars. This date was chosen based on the responses that we received. I am sorry that it didn't work for everyone but this date worked for far more people. Details will follow as soon as i know them!

On a separate note I uninstalled a perfectly good ceiling fan .the only reason I took it down was because I could not find a replacement globe… it’s a Hampton bay 52 inch…it is modern, clean and wireless remote controlled ..i hate to just pitch it if somebody has a use for it…the light underneath holds a 100 watt halogen..very bright and dimmable…would work well on a patio or what ever.

Scott and Maureen Sieck have graciously offered their home as the site of this year's Holiday Party. They are interested in your input as to which of two dates is preferred by the neighborhood. Please think about your availability and let me know whether you prefer 12/14 or 12/21. Both dates are Sundays in order to avoid conflicts with the many other events in December.

Fall Picnic

Fall 2008 Picnic

Sunday, October 19 is the date of this year's Winter Park Hills Fall Picnic. The picnic will be held on Tioga from 5-7PM. The procedure is "as usual". The cost is $2 per person which will pay for fried chicken, hot dogs for kids, drinks, and paper products. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. You will need to bring chairs or a blanket, too. Please pay and RSVP to Marilyn Nelson at 2430 Tioga Trail by Friday, October 17 so that I can order the appropriate amount of chicken. I need serving tables if anyone has some that we can use!

I'd love to include former neighbors and/or neighbors on Cochise or Park Pointe. If someone wants to volunteer to head that up, please let me know! Also, we still have neighbors that have not shared their e-mail address so feel free to remind/invite those who did not get this information.

Fall Picnic???

Hi to all! I am thinking about putting together the Fall Picnic but I want to gauge interest and availability, first. The picnic would be the usual, with fried chicken and pot luck items brought by YOU. If we go with it, it would probably need to be Sunday, Oct. 19. This is soon so I would love responses as soon as possible. If there is a good chance that you would make it (75% chance or more) or if you are a definite no for that date, please let me know. I'll get the word out as soon as possible. Also, if anyone has friends in Park Pointe and would be willing to stir up interest there, let me know. Thanks, Marilyn Nelson

Lighting Project Approved

We have gotten word that the city has received enough affirmative votes to announce approval of our neighborhood's lighting project. The vote tally was 39 in favor, 4 opposed, and 11 abstentions. We will be receiving a letter from the city with formal notification of the project's approval. We will notify you through the website when we receive information on the scheduling of the installation.

Lighting Update

I just wanted to update everyone on the lighting vote as it draws near to the end. Scott Sieck just spoke with Keith Moore at the city and obtained our current vote count. We need a total of 36 yes votes for the project to occur. We have 34 yes votes and 4 no votes. By my rough estimate, that means we have about 12 homes who have not yet responded. Homes not responding will transform to no votes at the conclusion of the voting period. So, please, if you are in favor of the lighting project and have not responded, do so as soon as possible! It would be very helpful to us if you let Scott Sieck (scottsieck@msn.com) know if you send in a yes vote at this point. Otherwise, some of us will need to walk door to door to nonresponders and try to answer questions and give information to help you make a decision. It would be great if we can get this done without having to go door to door. If you have not responded and want to e-mail questions, please feel free to contact Scott at the above e-mail address. We want you to feel as if you are making an informed decision that considers the full financial impacts on you, your property, and the neighborhood. Lighting Project Update 8/15/2008

As of this week, each of us has received the letter from the City of Winter Park regarding the final vote for our lighting project. If this is not the case please notify me immediately at scottsieck@msn.com or call Keith Moore to secure another copy of the letter. I have received many emails and calls in support of this proposed project.

Please be sure to acknowledge your approval (or disapproval) and return in the pre- paid postage envelope included with the letter as soon as possible.

Please be advised in order for this project to move to the scheduling phase the City will require 2/3’s affirmative votes. I believe there are 51 homes in our neighborhood and as such 34 affirmatives will be required to carry the project forward.

A recap of this proposed project includes 22 new decorative lamp poles spaced as indicated by the stakes. I am trying to secure some photos of existing projects within the city for upload to our web page. In the meantime a quick visit down Palmer to North Park Avenue or Old England ( between Webster and Palmer) will give you a firsthand view of the proposed lights.

You will note that at corners the stakes are place exactly where a street sign or stop sign currently exists. This is because the street name signs and or “stop” signs will be removed and attached to the lamp pole. In addition all new lamp poles will be wired underground thus eliminating both the over head wires feeding the existing concrete “butterfly” poles and the concrete poles themselves.

The underground wiring is done with a special burrowing device that actually burrows under and around tree roots and other underground obstacles. I’ve been asked if this might interfere with our irrigation systems…I am told the device burrows deep enough as to not affect and existing pipe lines. I also wish to mention another misconception. Majority rules , that is to say even an objecting household will be billed the monthly costs. This is not a homeowners association fee ,this is a City billed utility charge and as such subject to the city’s customary collection rights.

The proposed lamp project is a ZERO out of pocket upfront cost to each homeowner. It however is a perpetual cost, paid monthly, as a separate line item on our utility bills. The quoted cost was stated as $8.17 per month, lower than previously quoted. To put this project into perspective, if we as a neighborhood were to do it ourselves and install 22 lamps the cost has been estimated to exceed $50,000 or about $1,000 per household paid upfront. Add to that the annual maintenance/replacement cost plus utility bills to light 12 hours a day 365 days a year every year.

For $98 a year each we elevate the overall beauty of our neighborhood, increase the safety for ourselves and children and elevate our property values. I encourage all to respond quickly to insure we as a neighborhood are in fact budgeted by the city for installation. I would appreciate an email from those voting affirmative so I can monitor our progress during the next several weeks.

As you may have noticed, I staked the preliminary locations of the decorative lights. While I feel good about most of the positions, I believe I may receive feed-back on a few and need to make some adjustments. If you would like to email the neighborhood and offer them my contact information I can discuss any issues they may have. I will wait a few days before I mail the letter to see if I need to revise the map that will be attached.

To provide an update, I am prepping the letters for mailing. I anticipate they will go out next week and as I do that I will be staking the preliminary light locations as well. Should you email the homeowners with an update, please let them know these are preliminary and I am open to suggestions with regard to locations. However, staying with the stagger scenario and proper spacing, we need to be aware of the overall layout. As I mentioned during our meeting, there will be a map enclosed that will reflect the suggested placements.
